Reasons for FMLA Leave
There are six types of leave. They include leave for: (1) the birth of your child and in order to care for that child; (2) the placement with you of a child through adoption or foster care; (3) to care for your spouse, son, daughter or parent, if your spouse, son, daughter or parent has a serious health condition; (4) your own serious health condition that causes you to be unable to work; (5) due to any qualifying exigency (as defined by the Secretary of Labor) arising out of the fact that your spouse, son, daughter or parent is on active duty (or has been notified of an
impending call or order to active duty) in the Armed Forces in support of a contingency operation; or (6) the care of a service member injured on active duty if you are the spouse, son, daughter or parent or next of kin of the injured service member.
If your son or daughter is older than 18, he or she must be incapable of self-care because of a mental or physical disability. Your in-laws are not considered your parent, but under certain circumstances your legal guardian might be.
